These unique earthenware drums were inspired by the instruments used in the Udu region of Nigeria. Each one is hand-thrown and glazed with a pattern which "makes the complexity of African rhythms visual." The drums include an extra hole for a microphone, a base (when needed) and a cassette tape of Udu drum music.
Anne C. Ray has been throwing on the potter's wheel for over twenty-five years. She has made reproductions for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and written for Ceramics Monthly magazine. Her studio is now in Santa Fe, New Mexico where she lives with her three children.
