The Smokey Bear Red Hat was inspired by the original "Red Hats," an organized crew of Mescalero Apache firefighters whose first assignment off the reservation was to battle the fire at Capitan Gap, New Mexico where the orphaned cub was found among the scorched trees. He became the living representation of Smokey Bear, the fire prevention symbol used by the U.S. Forest Service.
